Australian Flags
Australia's first `Federal' flag was chosen from a national flag competition held in 1901. It was initially started by the Melbourne monthly magazine The Review of Reviews for Australasia, but was taken over by the government and a prize of 200 pounds was on offer. About 33000 entries were submitted. It was a private competition and mainly was aimed at those who were a British Ensign with a badge representative of Australia..
The winning design was chosen from five eventual winners who submitted almost identical designs. They were declared joint winners and Australia's first Prime Minister handed over the shared prize. The original design differed to the current design in the 6 points on the Federation star and the stars of the Southern Cross contained 5 points to 9points indicating their relative brightness in the sky.
